A Great Opening Day, Except…

The verdict is still out on Victor Martinez’s hamstring injury. If it’s serious, I cannot imagine that I would have much trouble finding aIt’s ironic that Victor entered camp in “the best shape of his life.” (Ron Schwane/AP) window to jump out of. Nevertheless, yesterday was a great win and, surprisingly, it did have that “we’re going to live and die with this game” feel to it. It’s amazing to feel that energy once again surrounding the team; hopefully it catapults them through the rest of the season. And yet, so many new questions are just begging to be answered, like Martinez’s injury.

The main question is probably the performance of pitcher C.C. Sabathia. Apparently, giving up five runs is freaking some people out. If it wasn’t for a couple misplaced pitches to our best friend Jim Thome, then we would be talking about another great performance from the big guy. The point is that he only gave up six hits and had seven strikeouts. For the first start of the season, I think I can accept that. He’ll be fine, don’t worry.

I also would not get used to Casey Blake delivering so well in the clutch But get used to those 9th inning roller coaster rides with everyone’s favorite daredevil - Joe Borowski! Like my dad always says, do you really want to see him trot out there to close out a Game Seven against a team like the Red Sox? Yikes.

One more thing: If yesterday (3-3, 3-run home run, 2 runs scored, and hey, he even drew a walk) was any indicator of the season Franklin Gutierrez is going to have, then the Indians are finally in for a big treat from a corner outfielder.  Something tells me he won’t hit 1.000, unfortunately.
